Pop-up to select variable auto-insert text?

I would like to create a Word template that, when opened, prompts the
user to select a series of variables (staff name, standard response 1,
standard response 2, etc.) to be placed in the letter.

Each choice would have predefined text to be inserted if an option is
selected.

Is this possible? If so, please provide guidance on how I would begin
learning how to do this. Book, website references, etc.... anything
would help.
