POP3 accounts and leave messages on server

I wish to view e-mail from a 'remote' another computer by setting up an account with the option 'leave copy of messages on server' to enable me to download on my main computer later. I've seen some messages on here that indicate it won't work with POP3 accounts. Is this true?
