Portal Server or WSS?

J

Joshua Campbell

I am thinking of installing Project Server 2003 onto a Windows Server 2003
machine. Could someone please either tell me or point me to a resource that
will tell me the benefits of going with Portal Server with Project Server
versus going with WSS? I'm assuming that Portal Server and Project Server
can be installed on the same machine.

Thanks.
Joshua

Portal Server does not integrate directly with Project Server. The Issues,
Risks and Documents features of Project Server work ONLY with WSS.

Partially true

Portal Server uses WSS as the engine and SPS Administrators would only
need to create a Top Level or Team Site to install Project Server.

True enough! I had my 2002 brain on when I answered that one! :)

Hi Joshua,

Windows SharePoint Services offers the following features:

Contacts lists
Links lists
Lists and spreadsheets
Custom lists
Document libraries
Picture libraries
Announcements lists
Events lists
Task lists
Discussion boards
Surveys
Meeting Workspace sites
Document Workspace sites
Pages
Personal views
Themes
Alerts

SharePoint Portal Server offers the same features and the following
additional features:

Audiences
Categories
News
Portal Sites
Personal Sites
Sites Directory
Search
Indexing
User Profiles
Single sign-on

SPS is much move powerful and typically used for Enterprise
Collaboration.

If you are just using Project Server and need either SPS or WSS, then
WSS is the better choice. Plus it's free :)

Hmmm...doesn't look like there's any really important features that has been
added to SPS over WSS for Enterprise Project Management. I'll probably
stick with just WSS. Thanks.
