Portfolio Server Attributes

I just curious as to what the attribute type and category specifications actually do. When creating a new attribute, I played around with those options, CHANGE_REQUEST_ATTRIBUTE, ENTRY_ITEM_TYPE, etc., but I couldn't find what those changes effected. Please let me know.
