"Position" in Page Numbers Dialogue Box

Hi,

In my 'Page Numbers' Dialogue Box, 'Position' always defaults to 'Bottom of
page (Footer)'.

I always want 'Top of page (Header)', and I always have to go to the trouble
of changing the command.

How can I make 'Top of page (Header)' the default?

Thanks

Hi,
I don't think it's possible to change that behaviour. But anyway, it's just
a click on the dropdown menu to change from header to footer, so I would
hardly call that "trouble", especially since inserting page numbers is
something you only do a couple of times (if not just once) within a
document. If you want to have the page number appear in the header of every
new document you create, I'd suggest creating a template with these settings
applied, so you won't have to do it every single time.

Hello Rafael,

You would be much better doing page numbers via the header itself. Here's
what I say on it in "Bend Word to Your Will"
(http://word.mvps.org/MacWordNew/Bend/BendWord.htm), as part of a larger
discussion:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
PAGE NUMBERS IN HEADERS AND FOOTERS
Page numbers can be applied without using headers or footers (via Insert
menu > Page Numbers) ‹ a text box is inserted instead.[See footnote below.]
However, incorporating page numbering as part of the header or footer, as
shown below, makes it much easier to control the formatting via styles,
since this method inserts a normal page number field (the appearance of
which can be changed globally via styles) rather than a text box (which
can't be changed via styles).
To apply page numbers to headers or footers:
View menu > Header and footer > type up the header or footer and add the
page number via the "#" button on the toolbar that appears.
Important: [Not applicable to Word 2004]: If you include the word "Page"
before the page number, then after applying page numbers in the headers or
footers, check in case the space between "Page" and the page number has
disappeared. If the space has been deleted, this will be a consequence of
having "Smart cut and paste" switched on (Edit menu > Preferences Š > Edit).
But smart cut and paste is so useful in other regards that it's better to
just check for this idiosyncrasy.
[Footnote]: If you receive a document and aren¹t sure which type of page
number is in the document, click the page number: if it is suddenly
surrounded by a little box, delete it and follow these notes instead.
The page numbering in "Bend Word to Your Will" uses this method; if this is
of interest, open the header in that document and have a look at the way the
whole header has been designed, including the style.
Cheers,
Clive Huggan
