positioning autoshapes and text boxes in word 2008

am new to a mac so i don't know if the trouble i am having is because of the difference between word for mac or because the function is changed in word 2008. to move a text box in the old word programs, i clicked and dragged. the text came with the shape and the shape stayed where i left it when i released the mouse. in word for mac 2008, placement of text boxes seems to have an evil mind all of its own, and "help" is no help. has anyone figured out how to get shapes and text boxes to stay where you want them?

What you're experiencing (if you previously used a Windows version) is most
likely that objects inserted into Mac Word are set to In Line with Text by
default & that default cannot be changed - whereas in Win Word it can. What
you need to do is apply some form of Text Wrapping to the object which will
give you more flexibility in positioning by dragging. Either the Formatting
Palette or the Format [object type] dialog will give you the wrapping &
positioning options.

Most everything is explained here, regardless of version - although
2007/2008 offer some variance:
