Positioning Word Table

rgelston

I have a Mac 733 Quisksliver, running OS 10.3.9 and Word v. X (2001).

I am formatting a document with a 4 column table set flush to the right
margin with wordwrap around the left side of the table.

So far, so good. Problem is, in this document, nothing can exceed the
0.98 in (2cm) margins. But no matter what I do in table formatting, its
right margin extends into the page margin by about 3/16 in.
Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Hi Beth,

Thanks for the reply. Yes, I've tried that - all that happens is that
the right hand column becomes narrower (which I don't want) and the
table margin stays where it is.

I have another problem on the first page, where there are 6 lines
available at the bottom of the page, but the program insists on
dropping them down to the next page. The amount of space in this doc
is critical - it has a strict page limit - so I need those 6 lines.

I hate Word!

Beth,

Thanks very much for the good advice and work-arounds. I'm going to
build another table and see if it has the same problem.

By the way, the reason we want to use text wrap for figues and tables
is because the NSF document length (15 pages) is absolute. There is a
lot to say in a proposal, so every word and line counts - white space
is a waste! We always try to reduce verbosity, but if one writes too
telegraphically there is the danger that reviewers (4-6) won't get the
point you are trying to make. It's a tightrope, for sure!

Beth,

I fixed the table problem by creating it in Canvas (you could probably
use Illustrator or any other graphics program as well) and inserting it
as a graphic. Because graphics maintain proportions when scaled, this
also allows me to adjust the table size without the nightmare of
adjusting the columns,

So thanks for the help, and I think I'm OK now.
