Possible conversion from FrontPage 2003 to Expression Web 2

I have been using FrontPage 2003 for several years for two websites I own and
maintain. Recently I just got notice that my web hosting provider is
discontinuing the FrontPage Server Extensions.

I have several components that do make use of the FrontPage Server
Extensions: Link bars, hit counters and photo galleries. If I were to
upgrade to Expression Web 2 would I be able to keep the link bars and photo
galleries without having to depend on the FrontPage Server Extensions? Also,
would I be able to edit my navigation structure and the photo galleries in
Expression Web?

Presently I am in the process of evaluating Expression Web. However, I am
not sure if certain features are disabled in the evaluation version of
Expression Web as I wanted to do a test conversion of one of my sites from
FrontPage to Expression Web and the option within Expression Web was dimmed.

Others can answer you better on what the specific differences are, but, in
general, it will require you to learn code rather than use the user-friendly
FrontPage you're used to..... EW is very very different.

Another alternative that you might consider is to investigate another
hosting company. There are many out there that will be supporting FP
Extensions for years in the future.

The EW free trial has nothing disabled in it
- it just is time limited
EW does not have any of the FP webbots in it,
- so you can't add to or change them (including the nav view)
- but it does support any existing ones (so they will not be removed)

As an alternative to EW, try the Free SPD 2007
- which does still support the FP webbots,
- but does not support themes
- but also adds all the SharePoint Tools
- and uses the EW interface for design tools

Rick, thanks for your reply. I recently changed hosting companies not too
long ago due to problems I have been having with a hosting company I have had
for many years (which I will not mention here). The tech support I had with
my previous hosting company was very unreliable and the answers I received
were "canned" answers, which influenced my decision to switch hosting
companies.

There are "external" Photo galleries (free) that you can import into Web
Expression or FrontPage. Hit counters depend on a server (someplace) to
work. They don't even have to be hosted on your host. The Link Bars (I
think) are created and managed by FP, not FPSE. There is a free copy of a
lite menu creator that ships with a book by Jim Chesire called "Using
Microsoft Expression Web 2 (Special Edition)".

I think DWT from fp2003 will transfer without much trouble.

I do recommend either a copy of the Dummies Web Expression book or the
online transition from FP to Web Expression course offered in the Web
Expressions Newgroup.

In the long run you will run out of hosts with FPSE but that could be more
than a couple of years. Lots of FP MVP's were affiliated with FPSE hosts
when I last looked.
