Possible Exchange/Firewall Issue

I am trying to allow a few outside users to connect via POP3 to our
exchange server.

They are connecting with Outlook 2003. It works from inside the
firewall so I am pretty sure that it's a firewall issue. From outside
of the firewall I can telnet via port 110 and log into the server. So
it would seem like Outlook should be able to do the same. However,
when we set up a POP3 account in Outlook it can not log into the
server i.e. test account and the Unable to log onto POP3 server and no
test message sent message comes up.

Let me know if there is another port that should be opened up or if
there are any other possible causes.

Why not use RPC over HTTP? It's safer than POP and will give a direct
connection to the Exchange server so that Outlook can used Cached Exchange
mode and keep local copies of the messages in the OST.

I don't think that's an option in MS Exchange 2000.

The smtp and pop3 server names are correct. If I ignore the test
message errors I am able to send email. It is just not receiving
email.

The test message errors are Log on to incoming mail server (POP3):
Outlook could not connect .... check SSL ports

And Could not send test message .... check SSL port etc...

I really just need to know how to set up POP3 and which ports are
needed so I can open it up on the firewall.

most people use the default port of 110, but you can use the secure port
(995)

I don't think that's an option in MS Exchange 2000.

Cached Exchange mode isn't, but Offline Folders are. As for RCP over HTTP,
the Exchange people in microsoft.public.exchange.admin can answer that.

offline folders only works with laptops - they connect and download mail

The OP did say "outside users", so I think it's reasonable to think that
offline folders will work with RCP over HTTP, but if you say it doesn't, I
defer to your greater knowledge and I apologize for bringing it up.
