possible solution to Office XP install problems

Louis Friend

I installed Office XP via group policy but stupidly did not un-install
a different version that was already on my machine. I also had a
roaming profile.

I always got the "installer" launching whenever i first used ANY of
the office Apps after a logon. After uninstalling I started getting
that "patch not found" error.

I tried many things that did not work. I eventually got the problem to
go away.

(back up/export your registry settings for outlook express profiles
and any other settings to a Reg key see below)

What I did:
(logged on as a LOCAL administrator and uninstalled the office suite)

username=whatever the account that is having the problem is named

Changed my username profile to local (instead of roaming)
logged off username
logged on as a local administrator
renamed my profile in c:\documents and settings to username.badoffice
created a blank username folder under there and/or
logged in again as "username"
This created a brand new profile for the user "username"
installed the Office software from a network share
reconfigured my desktop settings and merged the backed up reg-keys to
get my email settings (outlook express) back.

those keys are

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Account Manager

and

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Identities

rename and replace all "main identity" entries in this REG file to a
different name that isn't being used in the new outlook express
profile, e.g. NOT main identity. It can be changed later.

If you forgot settings you can toggle back and forth between
username.badoffice
and username.new

by changing them to username while as a different local admin.

Good Luck.
