Possibly corrupted profile/preferences

In the course of the last few days, I moved my "Microsoft User Data"
directory to an external drive (was turning FileVault on, sorry I did it,
but that's another story), then copied it back to the internal drive AFTER a
reboot; as I had Office Notifications turned on, it rebuilt the missing user
data folder on login, which I then overwrote with the backup copy.

Entourage seemed to handle it alright, all my email and newsgroup posts and
addresses, calendars, etc. were intact.

I don't think Word appreciated it too much. I had duplicate/corrupted
entries for previously opened documents, got a somewhat increased frequency
in the "disk full" error (being discussed in a different thread), the
customized toolbars were at defaults (even thought I copied the previous
user data folder back and didn't touch the applications folder) and now
printing page number X of Y in the footer is a crapshoot. I'll occasionally
get it right, but once in a while I'll get a document that prints "1 of 1"
then "2 of 2" then "3 of 3" etc. It doesn't track the document; sometime it
works with document A, and sometimes it doesn't work with document A.

How can I create a new profile from scratch? I thought about archiving all
the Entourage stuff, deleting the user data folder, then importing the data
back. Is there a way to delete just the Word stuff so I can fix that
instead?

Thanks,
Dave

Hi Dave,

Try testing/trashing your Normal template and prefs. These procedures as
well as others that may help are at the URL below. In fact, start by
repairing disk permissions.

No, there's no way to delete just the Word stuff, but Word shouldn't have
gone bananas the way it did, especially since you restored the MUD. You
hadn't moved your Normal template out of the MUD, right? That would
certainly explain at least some of your problems. Anyway, you should find
help on the above page.

I found the problem...MATHTYPE 5.1

When I uninstalled MathType, the problem went away.

When I reinstalled MathType, the problem returned.

If I disable the MathType add-in, the problem goes away.

If I enable the MathType add-in, the problem returns.

Right after I bought a license too...I wish I could for the life of me have
noticed if it did this or not while in the 30-day trial period.

Next step is to see if it does this with a "virgin" normal
template...tomorrow.

Glad you nailed it down!
