Postal Barcode in Template?

I've created a small template to print envelopes, which is more flexible and
easier to use than the embedded "Envelopes and Labels" choices. It is
embarassingly simple- upon opening a new document, the cursor just goes to
the address field (no popup boxes for name, street, etc.- I don't know how to
create them), but the fonts, spacing, etc. are all the way I want them. The
template has the BARCODE function, but with each new document, it needs to be
edited.

I'm wondering if there is a way to add the postal barcode in a somewhat
automated fashion, such as a window that would come up when a new doc is
created based on the template to ask for the zip code and then update the
BARCODE function in the template. It would be even better if the BARCODE
function could find the zip code when it is typed in, but I would guess there
are too many variables (position on page, line number, etc.) to make that
practical.

Look up the Barcode field in help. It has a switch that lets it adjust to a
bookmarked area. That is how it is set using the Envelopes wizard. Take a
look at an envelope added to a document with the wizard. Display bookmarks
and display the field code to see how this works.

Thanks. I haven't used bookmarks much, but I think I get it- I've added the
ASK field in a text box at the bottom of the envelope template, in front of a
BARCODE field which is looking for the content of the ASK field. If I click
on that, it asks for the zip code, and then uses the text entered for the
BARCODE field.

I wonder if there is a way, opening a document from a template, to have that
ASK field automatically pop up?

I have envelope templates where the entire Envelope Address frame is
bookmarked and the BARCODE field finds and reads the ZIP code within the
address.

First, read Suzanne's response. Then go back and look at the envelopes that
Word creates with its Wizard. At least when I first started doing this, the
entire two lines of the address were inside the bookmark and it worked fine.
You can download a tutorial on ASK and Fill-In fields at

are going to, you may just want to go the extra step and learn about
UserForms. They are a lot more flexible and powerful.
