PostScript Fonts on Word X

K

Kevin G. Barnhurst

When I installed Word X, two of my PostScript fonts, Bembo Expert and Gill
Sans, stopped working. (Other fonts from the same group, such as Bembo,
do show on screen.)

Here's the rundown.

PROBLEM. When I open a document with MSWordX:mac (v. 10.1.4) or Adobe
Acrobat 5.mac, the characters formatted using Bembo Expert won't show on
screen and won't print, documents in Gill Sans open with another font
substituted, and characters formatted using Gill Sans Display MT Bd will
show on screen but won't print.

ENVIRONMENT. I am using a new 12-inch Macintosh PowerBook G4, running
OSX and using Microsoft Word. I have tried printing with a Canon BJC-85
and Epson Stylus Color 740, and neither will reproduce the characters.

RESEARCH. I read the help guides for the programs and for the computer. I
searched the web as well. I also read the FAQs on the Agfa/Monotype and
Microsoft websites.

TROUBLESHOOTING. Within the programs, I followed the Help steps for
troubleshooting fonts. (Word directs you to the Preferences panel and Font
Substitution, but the fonts don't turn up there.) I went to FontBook and
made sure the fonts were loaded and currently available in the system. Both
fonts do show up in the menu of MSWordX, the Gill as WYSIWYG but the
Bembo Expert shows blank characters, followed by fractions. I tried
restarting, but no change occurred. There are no printer fonts for these
typefaces in the original files as purchased from the vendor.

RECENT CHANGES. My previous computer (until this week) was a PowerBook
G3 running OS 9.2 and MS Word 98, and my fonts from you showed up
consistently and printed on the same machines listed above with no
problem. These fonts also worked fine with Word 98 and Word 2001 (and
previous versions as well) on my iMac running OS X.

THE FONTS. The affected fonts are PostScript. In the Info window, the icons
show the letters FFIL, and the file type is shown as FontSuitcase.

Are you sure the problem is Word? This has been reported as a problem
with certain PostScript fonts due to Mac OS X 10.3.5. You don't say what
system you are using, but you do say that you changed computers and,
presumably, systems.

Your experience with Word 98 and Word 2001 is completely irrelevant
because even though that iMac may have *had* Mac OS X, you were running
under Mac OS 9 (Classic). So it sounds to me like you are using Mac OS X
/ Word for the first time. m.

PS If you are using Mac OS X / Word for the first time, why not use Word
2004?

I think you should expect problems with expert fonts in Word v.X Those
funny fraction characters live in a nether world between Mac extended
character set and Unicode. Word v.X is far from perfect in that area,
and you are simply asking for trouble if you share docs with them in
with PC Office users. Matt's right. Word 2004 has unicode support.

I don't have the exact fonts you complain of. Most of my Gill Sans are
Datafork TrueType. It might be a family that comes with the system. I
can't say for sure - there are a lot of black sheep in my font
families. Check you do not have duplicates with Font Book.
I don't have any special problem with Postscript fonts.

PS: 12" PB is cute innit? I love mine

Yes, the problem is with Word. I'm operating OS X 10.3.5, but was
using Word 2001 for a week before installing Word X (this is an office
machine, and so I don't have the option of upgrading to Word 2004
yet). The older software was running on OS X, not Classic. So on the
same computer and with the same operating system, the fonts worked in
Word 2001 but won't work in Word X. It's definitely a Microsoft
problem.

Since posting the original message, I downloaded and installed the
Office X 10.1.5 Update, and now the Gill Sans is working. Bembo
Expert, however, still fails to show on screen.

If you have a font that does not display in Word but works in other
programs under the same system, could you send me a copy of that font?

The Bembo Expert won't show regular alphabetic characters ... they are not
there. Most of Bembo Expert glyphs are found using shift (most fractions),
option, or option+shift.

Well, there's a problem! You sure these were not downloaded from a newsgroup?
Because Monotype, as to the other vendors, delivers both files! If you have a
proof of purchase, get some fresh downloads.
