In simple terms, the viewer is just that a viewer no editing allowed

PowerPoint is the full program - it lets you create/edit/save presentations
and print them in a variety of ways. The viewer is basically just that;
it's free and allows you to view presentations and print them in a very
limited way. Period.

The viewer is also currently several versions behind PowerPoint itself,
meaning that the latest features aren't supported in the viewer.
