power point 97 with XP Pro OS

I have a PC running XP Pro and Office 97 - every so often (more frequently
lately) that power point simply refuses to open. I have:
1) reinstalled, patched
2) unisntalled, reinstalled, patched
3) rebooted
4) check to make sure no rogue apps are hogging down memory or anything
weird

Any ideas what might be causing this and how to fix?
