Power Point / Entourage visual disappears and Word crashes

Processor: Intel

Hello,

I'm running Windows '08 on a Macbook, Leopard 10.5.2, with all the most recent updates installed for both Mac and Office.

In Powerpoint, without warning, the whole image suddenly disappears. The program doesn't close, and I can still see the menu bars, but there's nothing I can do to see the image. I just see the desktop. I have to restart the computer (re-starting PP doesn't do it) in order to get the image back. Apparently there's no damage to the file.

The exact same thing happens in Entourage, but I don't know if I should post in another forum for that. They may well be related issues.

And finally, Word has been crashing frequently. It just closes, and yes, loses what I've been working on. Drives me nuts.

I was told earlier that it might be related to using "Spaces," so I've disabled that. No change.

I'd like to avoid re-installing Office, to avoid the hassle, if possible. Anyone have an idea what the problem might be?

Hello P.-

If you're actually at Leopard 10.5.2 I'm afraid you *don't* have "all the
most recent updates installed for both Mac and Office" - 10.5.4 is the
current build of Leopard, so you're 2 [significant] updates behind plus any
additional security/hardware/firmware downloads released since 10.5.2 was
posted back around the first of February.

Also, by "Windows 08" I assume you mean Office 2008?

The first step is to get the 10.5.4 COMBO Update from the Apple site, then
repair disk permissions, shut down the Mac for a moment or two & see if the
situation persists when you start up again.

Do Not reinstall Office. That is rarely an appropriate method of resolving
anything. You might confirm that Office is at 12.1.2, however :)

Hi Bob,

THanks for the reply. Sorry, I was wrong (I think). I actually did download the 10.5.4 updates a few days ago. Strangely, though, "about this Mac" still says 10.5.2, and if I go to software update, it still shows that I need to download 10.5.4. Is this normal? It's a huge update (560MB), so I'm not so thrilled about doing it again, since it ties things up for a while.

Thanks,
P.

Yeah, that's one of the "flaws" in the Software Update updates - they don't
always work as advertised. I realize that it's a big one, but that's what
makes the difference between the Combo & the SU version :) I strongly
recommend that you take the time. Not via SU, however - use this link to
fetch the COMBO from Apple Downloads:

http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/

[BTW - Although I rely on SU for most everything else (security updates,
iPhoto, etc.) since mid 10.3.x I haven't allowed it to update OS X itself.
When it notifies me of an OS X update I politely decline, then head for the
Combo version once it's posted on the site.]

If your reluctance is because your normal connection is rather slow, you
might explore the possibility of visiting "someone" who has a high-speed
line & is willing to let you hook up, or head for your favorite internet
cafè if you have wireless capability.

Thanks for the reply. I've now successfully updated to 10.5.4, but Word is still crashing. I'm not sure if Entourage and PP are still doing their disappearing act, since it was happening sporadically anyway. My main concern at this point is resolving the Word problem (and it is 12.1.2).

Any suggestions on where to look?

Thanks again,
Patrick

Did you run Disk Utility - Repair Disk Permissions after doing the 10.5.4
update? If not, do that then shut down for a minute or two before starting
up. If you continue to experience the crashes reply with complete details.

I've now run Repair Disk Permissions, and Word continues to crash. How do I get the details to send to you?

Patrick

You don't need to send anything directly to me :) We handle everything
right out in the open for other visitors to the group to see & benefit from.

However, if your current problem is with Word rather than PPt it would be
better to post into the Word group as a new message. Include a full
description of exactly what you are doing at the time of a crash, what your
definition of "crash" means, the specific content of any error messages,
whether it happens with specific or all documents & any other details about
the current situation.
