Power Point flies sent in e-mails from PC's won't open

I have a new Mac running OS X 10.5.5 with an Intel processor and am running PowerPoint:mac 2004. I was initially able to open PowerPoint files sent to me in e-mails from PC's, but after a recent mac update, I can no longer do so and Adobe Reader tries to open them which does not work. The new PowerPoint files I've created on my machine work and can be opened just fine. I've tried to change the files sent to me to different suffixes but none work. Any suggestions?

I wouldn't change the file extensions (suffixes)
if I were you - unpredictable things could
happen.

Perhaps the files sent to you were in the new
..pptx format? Office 2004 for Mac won't be able
to read those file without a converter.
PowerPoint 2007 is the latest version for PCs,
and the default file format is .pptx, which is
incompatible with previous versions of both
Office for Windows (up through 2003) and Mac
(up through 2004).

Have you tried installing the Open XML File
Format Converter for Office 2004? That will allow
you to open Office 2007 or 2008 documents in Office 2004.
You need to have Office 2004 11.4.0 or later installed.
