Power point will not insert .Doc files

Operating System: Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger)
Processor: intel

I have created my PowerPoint presentation I need to insert slides from a outline file specifically a Word .Doc file the error message is (PowerPoint cannot open the type of file represented by Macintosh). any help would be appreciated.

Hi Maggie -

The outline must be saved in RTF format as specified in PPt Help - .doc,
..docx or other formats won't work.
