PowerPoint 07 Custom Animations Preview

I found an interesting situation with a PPT today, and did not find any
suggested solutions via searches so, maybe someone can propose a possible
snag that I am missing.

File: .pptx
Feature: Custom Animations
Issue: No auto Preview or preview when hitting "Play".

Symptoms: Can choose the item, or the slide. Click the Preview button or
"Play" button and the window flashes black for a second and back, and then
nothing else shows. If you click the slide, and then hit Slide Show, it
plays with no issues.

Question: What might be holding back the preview feature. It is slowing
down processing of new slides for new company presentations.
