Powerpoint 2000 Cliparts in Powerpoint 2002

D

Dario de Judicibus

I got a license of Office XP Standard. I had Office 2000 Preprium in the
past. So I have a lot of nice PP 2000 cliparts I am used to. I used the so
called Clipart Gallery to search them by text. Now I have the Clipart
Organizer. Nice. I moved all my old cliparts in a directory and created a
collection in the new organizer, but... I cannot search them anymore by
text. Why? Because I do not know how to import clipart & keywords in PP
2002. Any idea? In the PP Help, each time I search for Clipart Gallery, help
forward me to Clipart Organizer. So I do not know how to use the new one
with the old stuff.

Help appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Hi, Dario. As you know, Clip Organizer = Office XP, and Clip Gallery =
Office 2000. (Just wanted to post that information very clearly for
others who may be following this thread.)

Unfortunately, while you can import clips from the Clip Gallery so that
Clip Organizer will also see them, Clip Organizer does not recognize
clips which were in a custom category in the Clip Gallery.
http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;EN-US;Q281858 has specifics.

That kb article also says, "Keywords and descriptions of clips from Clip
Gallery 5.0 are not recognized or transferred to Clip Organizer when you
import the clips." I always assumed that meant for *all* clips imported
from Clip Gallery, but now that I read the article more closely, I see
the title is "Clip2002: User-Defined Clips from Earlier Versions
Unavailable," and the first paragraph talks about "clips in a custom
category." So I can't tell if that statement is talking about keywords
and descriptions for just "user-defined" clips (those in custom clip
categories) or for all clips.

I'm hoping someone else will be able to clarify. If not, I'll ask one of
the Design Gallery MVPs.

Anyway, the above means that -- at least in some cases -- the clip
keywords do not transfer to Clip Organizer. You'd have to add new
keywords manually in the Clip Organizer.

Perhaps you can open Clip Gallery and let it recatalog your clips. Since
you moved them, it just doesn't know where to find them. Once they're
cataloged again, you should be able to use Clip Gallery to search your
old clips. http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;EN-US;Q262875

That article talks about when you upgrade to Office 2000, but the
techniques for reindexing the clips in 2000 should be the same
regardless.

I know that's not a perfect workaround, but it's the best I can do.

Acc... That's bad... Really a pity MS did not provide some migrate tool. I
wonder if it is possible to write one. It would be necessary to understand
where keywords are store in both tools (CO and CG).

I hope too. I have not many custom clipart. I would be happy to convert at
least MS standard ones.

I do not have anymore Clip Gallery on the system. I uninstalled the previous
version when I installed the new one since I was told that mixing Office
2000 and Office XP is bad, really bad ;-)

Can I install again Clip Gallery only?

In the CG, the keywords are in either the CAG or the MMC files. Can't
remember which. I *think* the CAG files are the categories and keywords,
and the MMC indexes the CAG files.

I'll double-check with them. Wasn't sure if you were still following the
thread, so I haven't asked yet. :)

Awwww, where'd you hear that? I've got 'em both on this system, and I
haven't had any major problems.

I think you may be able to, but I don't know for sure. You could try
doing a custom install of Office 2000 and then just selecting the Clip
Gallery features -- set them to run from the harddrive.

Usual rule of thumb is to install oldest to newest, though.

Or, if you know which clips you're looking for specifically, you might
just use http://dgl.microsoft.com and download them from online. Most of
the older clips are available there, and you'd get the keywords and
stuff with 'em.

Dario, I asked about this, and yes, you can install just Clip Gallery
(from Office 2000) alongside Office XP. I'd use the custom install as I
described above.
