PowerPoint 2000 - "Insert Slides From Files" Creates Automatic Transition

The problem I'm having is with PowerPoint 2000. I use the program to
project song lyrics, announcements, etc. at my church. I have several
hundred song/announcement slides saved as separate PowerPoint files, and
will insert the slides needed into a PowerPoint presentation using the
"Insert Slides From Files" option.

The problem is this: None of the slides that I insert have "automatic slide
transition" checked. They all are set for manual transition. However, when
I insert those slides into a separate PowerPoint presentation, they are
automatically assigned a 15-second automatic transition. As you can
imagine, this can be quite bothersome in a presentation where being able to
control the timing manually is key.

I've searched the preferences and options for a solution to this problem,
but cannot find what setting is causing this automatic transition
assignment.

There are certain slides in the presentation that I personally set to move
automatically (when announcements are being displayed). However, the other
slides, that should be moving by manual transition only, are being set to
automatic transition when inserted into a blank presentation. How can I
correct this problem?

Hi Brian,

If you have the presentation to loop until escape (in the Slide Show =>
Set-up menu), then PowerPoint will force the auto advance you have
described.

I use 3 separate PPT files for the services. 1) Announcement loop 2) Sermon
3) Everything else (Hymns, praise songs, responsive reading, special music,
etc.) Only the first one is set to loop until escape.

To provide a bit more background:

1) The presentations in question are not set to loop until escape. I do run
an announcement loop file before the service begins, but this is not the
file I try to insert the slides into.

2) The file I'm inserting into would be laid out like this: Hymn 1, Hymn
2, (both manual advance), two prayer slides (both auto advance after 20
seconds, ending at a black slide that is manual advance), Hymn 3,
Announcement Slides (these run during the offertory and are auto advancing
at 7 seconds each, ending at a black slide that is manual advance).

The problem comes into play when I have to, at the last second, either
insert a set of hymn slides from another file--or even (as the case was
today) copy and paste a slide that had already existed in the same file.
None of the slides in question have "Auto Transition" selected when you go
to the "Slide Transition" menu. However, when the slides are inserted (or
copied and pasted), the "Auto Transition" box for those inserted (or copied
and pasted) slides is checked and set at 15 seconds. This is what I'm
trying to keep from happening.

On a side note that may be of interest, I have PowerPoint XP on my home
laptop, and have never had this problem with it (I create the presentations
at home, copy them to a CD, and move them to the desktop being used at our
church). Even with that transfer, the original formatting I give to the
slides in terms of transitions remain intact--it's only when I need to
insert or copy and paste slides that this happens.

Any help you or anyone else can give on how I can prevent this from
happening, rather than having to think to select all the pasted slides and
uncheck "auto transition," would be highly appreciated.

Brian,

I think the problem may stem from the version differences between 2000 and
2002 (XP). In your presentations that you design at home, are there
multiple master slides being used? Do any of the masters have an
auto-timing advance attached? PowerPoint 2000 can display presentations
with multiple masters, but not correctly edit them. This could create some
fairly bazaar problems cutting and pasting/inserting.

If this is the case, I would expect the problem to not be evident on your
home computer, just the one at church (hence only affecting the last minute
changes). Is there any chance of getting the church's software updated to
PPT 2002 or 2003? Most churches have access to programs that offer software
at substantial savings.



I came across something totally unrelated (I think) and unique issue when I
was playing with trying to duplicate your problem. If a show is running and
from that show a hyperlink opens another presentation, you can not then open
that linked presentation in edit view at all, weird.
