PowerPoint 2000 slow to open

M

Malcolm

I have MS Office 2000 Premium and with the exception of PowerPoint the
Office programmes and all other applications installed on my system open
without undue delay.

I use F-Prot anti-virus that in my experience over 14 years of usage has
never caused a delay to any installed programme on my systems in that
time. Also installed are Windows Defender and Spy-Bot.

The only add-in I have is SeqSave and that has been installed after the
starting delay, of one minute and 10 seconds, to PPT became apparent.

Office was installed several months ago after my computer crashed
necessitating a complete reinstall of the operating system, Windows XP
Home, after formatting the hard drive. The service packs for Windows
and Office are installed and up-to-date and Windows Update is also
current. There are no error messages nor anything evident to indicate
the cause of the delay.

I would appreciate having any constructive suggestions that could lead
to reduce this delay to a more acceptable time.

Actually, F-prot was implicated in PPT slowdowns way back in the day.
Because it was so long ago, I'm having trouble remembering the details, to
tell you the truth. But you're using PPT 2000, and that would be around the
right timeframe....

Ah, here we go:

http://groups.google.com/group/micr...ch?group=microsoft.public.powerpoint&q=F-prot

I mentioned a few times in 2002 that I thought I recalled that F-prot had to
actually be uninstalled, that just disabling it wouldn't do the trick. So,
I'd first try disabling it, and, although I am not happy about having to
recommend this, I'd suggest you uninstall F-prot as your next step in
troubleshooting.

Looks like Journalling in Outlook was also a problem during that timeframe,
but I'm not sure if that was an Office 2000 or Office XP thing.

Unfortunately, Google Groups -- or at least the search function there --
seems to only go back to 2002. Bummer.

Steve,

Better? PowerPoint now opens almost instantly! Thank you {8;-))

Please explain what is going on?

Thank you for your reply. Because of my previous experience with F-Prot
and PowerPoint 2000 on the same systems I was reasonably confident the
problem lay elsewhere.

Applying Steve Rindsberg's solution has achieved an almost instant start
up of PPT so maybe F-Prot wasn't the culprit in 2002 and 2004?
Nevertheless your time and trouble in responding is very much appreciated.

Really glad to hear Steve's solution worked for you.

We had a few reports of F-prot causing the slows, and uninstalling it fixed
them, so I'm inclined to think it was a problem at one time or another. I
was hesitant to suggest that this time, though, because it's been soooo long
since we've heard of it causing any issues. So I'm doubly glad to hear
Steve's trick did the trick.
