PowerPoint 2003 Background doesn't show on monitor

When I'm trying to create a presentation and I try to set the background I
can see it on the preview of the slides on the left hand column but the main
area where I'm creating the side is totally dark gray.

I also can't see my text boxes, I can see the circles but not the words and
so can't line up mutiple boxes
