PowerPoint 2003 with SharePoint Slide Library?

Hi,

1. Is it possible to use PPT 2003 with SharePoint MOSS 2007 Slide Library?

2. When a slide in the library is updated and I open a presentation created
in PPT which contains that slide, I am asked whether to accept the updated
slide - Yes 0r No.

3. However, when I open the same PPT 2007 presentation Saved As a 2003
presentation, the Update - Yes or No dialog doesn't appear - hence I can't
choose whether or not to accept the new version of the slide. The
presentation just opens up with the old version of the slide.

4. I need to be able to update a PPT 2003 linked to the slide library
because some of our foreign offices only have Office 2003.

Thanks.

Alan

Hi, Alan,

I don't know a lot about SharePoint and MOSS, but I think that 2003 doesn't
work with slide libraries the way you need them to.

Slide libraries were introduced as a new feature in PPT 2007, and then only
in volume license versions (Professional Plus and Enterprise, or Ultimate
[which is available retail]). You can't access a SharePoint slide library
from within PPT 2007 that comes with Office Professional, Standard, Small
Business, Home and Student, or Basic.

So I suspect you also cannot access these features from within PPT 2003,
either.

You should be able to go to the SharePoint site and check out the file,
though. That's a little different than working it from within PPT directly.
3. However, when I open the same PPT 2007 presentation Saved As a 2003
presentation, the Update - Yes or No dialog doesn't appear - hence I can't

PPT 2007 uses the XML format. When you save a file as 2003, you are saving
it as a binary format. I *think* SharePoint relies on the XML to be able to
do these kind of slide updates and such, which is why you don't get the
update options when opening a 2003-format file.

But I could be wrong. You may want to ask your question in the SharePoint
groups. I suspect you'll get better information there.

Hi Echo,

I'm afraid you are probably right about everything.

I may be able to have users dial in to their regular office computer with
Office 2007 and access to SharePoint, open presentation in PPT 2007, accept
slide updates, save as PPT 2003 filoe, and email it to the foreign office
where they are.

That looks like the only solution.

Thanks again.

Alan
