Powerpoint 2004 and OpenType Fonts...

Gavin Lawrie

We use Adobe OpenType fonts in some of our presentations. The fonts
work perfectly with Powerpoint Vx, but don't work at all with
PowerPoint2004. We have the identical problem on two different
machines. Have tried various flavours of Panther (10.3.2 - 10.3.5) and
this doesn't seem to affect it - it seems to be an Office problem (the
same problem appears in Word2004).

Have tried deleting and reinstalling Office 2004, but not made any
difference. Does anyone know if there is a font cache used just by
Office that might be corrupted and causing this behaviour? I can't
believe that MS has released a product that doesn't have OpenType
support, so suspect it is a configuration issue. But what...?

Regards

Gavin Lawrie.

Hi Gavin,

I can't offer you a solution, but I can give you some encouragement by
telling you that for me, Office 2004 does support OTF fonts from
Adobe. I'm using the Futura font from Adobe OTF and it is supported
just fine. The Futura font is an editable font, I don't know if the
problem could be coming from there...

Something rather important that I believe to have noticed is that
Office 2004 supports OTF in a more compatible way with Office for
Windows. That is with Powerpoint X the lengths of the characters were
not exatcly the same which caused me to reszie the length of my
textboxes for Windows usuers... This problem seems to have vanished
in Office 2004, and I no longer have to worry about checking the text
box sizes.

Cheers, John

Thanks for the info. Pleased that there is light at end of tunnel -
hopefully if you can get OpenType working then so will I: but trying to
resolve what is needed to get it working remains the issue. OfficeVx
running on the same computer (concurrently) has no problems with the
Font Files - so something must have changed in Office itself to cause
this problem. Knowing what would be helpful: if this is a non-fixable
problem it has major implications for our company and our choice of
software.

So, any ideas what I can try to persuade Office 2004 to work with these
TrueType fonts?
