Powerpoint 2004 Crashing

J

Jeff Worboys

After loading Office 2004 over the existing Office 2004 Beta PP fails
continually when opening a blank presentation and then choosing a different
slide design. The behavior exhibited is for PP to close and generate the
error log.

I have repaired disk permissions, deleted .plist files, and removed Office
using the removal tool without any positive results. This worked fine in the
beta and I was quite shocked that it failed after having such a good
experience with the beta.

Any clues where to go now?

I have this problem and this is with the version Microsoft is shipping to
those who bought Office v.X this year. I upgraded and now PowerPoint is
unusable so I'll probably have to go back to Office v.X.

Hi Jeff and Jim,

Actually, I'm using the Student/Teacher version and it is exhibiting
the same behavior. Having read Jim's post in another thread, I went
ahead and repaired disk permissions, but this didn't change the
result. I'm running 10.3.3. I still have Office v.X installed, as I
wanted to make sure 2004 was running fine before uninstalling it.

By the way Jim, thanks for your contributions to the Mac community!

I called Microsoft Support last night and got the following answer:

PowerPoint v.X and 2004 cannot co-exist. In the Microsoft Office 2004
folder, go to Additional Tools, Remove Office, and run the Remove Office
program. Remove everything having to do with Office v.X. Then move the
Microsoft Office v.X folder to Trash and empty Trash. PowerPoint should
then run properly. If it doesn't, run Remove Office again and this time
remove everything (both v.X and 2004) but do not drag the Microsoft Office
2004 folder to trash. Empty Trash, then try to run PowerPoint. It will
probably treat it like a new installation and reconfigure everything, but
PowerPoint should run right. It worked for me anyway.

Arrgghhh...I have battled with this all evening and today to no avail. I
have run the removal wizard multiple times to ensure that it did not see
Office X or 2004 anymore. I have deleted the preferences folders for Office.
I have reinstalled...I have pleaded with it...I have cussed it. ;-)

My next thing is to remove all vestiges of Office again and then reinstall
the Office v.X version and start over. Interestingly enough Office v.X and
2004 beta coexisted very well. I ran it for over a month without a single
crash.

I have exactly the same problem (PP fails when I try to change to a
different background). This thread contained the advice to remove the
previous version of Office, but this can't be the problem in my case
because I had erased my hard drive before installing Panther and Office
2004 (along with other software).

I'm using the Teacher/Student Version. Has anyone found out how to
stop PP from failing? Any ideas about what's causing this problem. It's
very frustrating because changing backgrounds is a common task.

Arrgghhh...I have battled with this all evening and today to no avail. I
have run the removal wizard multiple times to ensure that it did not see

My next thing is to remove all vestiges of Office again and then reinstall

I called Microsoft Support last night and got the following answer:

PowerPoint v.X and 2004 cannot co-exist. In the Microsoft Office
2004
folder, go to Additional Tools, Remove Office, and run the Remove Office
program. Remove everything having to do with Office v.X. Then move
the
Microsoft Office v.X folder to Trash and empty Trash. PowerPoint
should
then run properly. If it doesn't, run Remove Office again and this time
remove everything (both v.X and 2004) but do not drag the Microsoft
Office
2004 folder to trash. Empty Trash, then try to run PowerPoint. It
will
probably treat it like a new installation and reconfigure everything, but
PowerPoint should run right. It worked for me anyway.

After loading Office 2004 over the existing Office 2004 Beta PP fails
continually when opening a blank presentation and then choosing a

I have repaired disk permissions, deleted .plist files, and removed

Any clues where to go now?

Hi Jeff,

I contacted someone from the beta test team. They think you may have more
than one copy of Office 2004 installed on your computer.

Use Finder to search for "Office 2004" (without quotation marks). Drag any
such folder to the trash, empty the trash. Delete any Microsoft office
application plist preferences and the Microsoft folder inside preferences.
Remove any Microsoft daemons running in the log-in or startup sections of
MacOS.

Restart the computer. Empty the trash. Run disk utility to repair
permissions, then try installing again.

Sure hope this helps. Are you running any haxies? Anti-Virus? Make sure you
turn all such things off before trying again.

Joel,

I have removed (using the wizard and manually) all instances and the
preferences folder and reinstalled. Still an issue. I am just going to use
Keynote and wait for an update or article to pop up on Technet. As other
people are having this same problem I am sure something will turn up.

JW

Have you tried deleting EVERYTHING but the Office '04 Student/Teacher
edition folder itself (all preferences, all Office v.X files, etc.)?
PowerPoint 2004 won't run right if Office v.X and/or any Office v.X
supporting files are installed.
Also try disabling any haxies and see if that helps.

Thanks Jim!

I'll give this a try. I've done everything here except check the startup
stuff and the search...just assumed things would be where they should
be...;-)...of course supporting 25,000 Office XP boxes should have taught me
that always "ain't" so!

Going to the beach for a few days but will hack on it when I get back.

I found the issue. While looking through a folder I found a file that looked
like some sort of temp file. It was named TW######.(some ext) (# = some
numbers) I trashed it but it would not delete saying it was in use. I
restarted...it disappeared and voila! Powerpoint will allow changing the
slide design just like before.

Awesome! Glad you found the problem. One of the things about beta software
is you can be sure that there are plenty of undocumented bugs. Looks like
you found one and solved the problem.

Enjoy your time off.

Hello!
I'm a bit confused now after reading all those messages on
incompatibility-issues with Office vX and Office 2004 on the same machine.

DOES it mean, I CANNOT use the try-out-version without risking my
vX-Installation?

I really want to try it out before investing a bunch of money. Does it do
quartz-text-rendering (Office vX-Testdrive was stripped of it and thus
didn't give full credit to the programs full versatility), any other
features left out?

Thanks
Rolf

I'm pretty sure it does. The Office X Test Drive did not because it wasn't
until Service Release 1 was released that Quartz Text Smoothing became
available. By then the Test Drive had already been made available and
wasn't updated. The release version of Office 2004 does support Quartz Text
Smoothing.

There is a list of differences between the Test Drive and the full version

I have exactly the same problem (PP fails when I try to change to a
different background). This thread contained the advice to remove the
previous version of Office, but this can't be the problem in my case
because I had erased my hard drive before installing Panther and Office
2004 (along with other software).

I'm using the Teacher/Student Version. Has anyone found out how to
stop PP from failing? Any ideas about what's causing this problem. It's
very frustrating because changing backgrounds is a common task.

Exactly the same issue here as well. I installed Office 2004
yesterday, uninstalled Office v.X using the uninstaller tool, emptied
trash, deleted out any remaining traces of the old Office, repaired
permissions, resolved duplicate fonts, etc. However, each time I apply
a new slide design PowerPoint immediately crashes. This happens on
both new and old presentations. I can create a new presentation,
change the background and it will immediately crash. I did not have
either a beta or test drive version installed.

I'm out of ideas on how to fix the problem. Seems to be a rather
serious bug or incompatibility with something. I run a fairly generic
system and don't have any system hacks installed. I'm running 10.3.4.
