Powerpoint 2004 to 2008 transfer issues

I have many documents created in Ppt 2004 on a PC that have been working fine on my new Macbook Pro with ppt 2004. When opening them in ppt 2008 some slides appear to have a mystery extra object beneath them that I cannot select. This means that when scrolling through the presentation in slide view mode the slide scrolls up off the screen a few inches rather than moving on to the next slide. try as I might, I cannot find/select anything in the empty space beneath that would account for this behaviour. Any ideas?
