Powerpoint 2007 opening in separate windows

When I start Powerpoint 2007 it opens to a new blank presentation. If I try
to then open an existing presentation it opens the 2nd presentation in a
separate window. I have to close out of both presentations to close
Powerpoint completely. Can this be stopped?
