I have tried automatic download of templates and themes, but each time I get
a failure message.
The ActiveX is install and enabled.
I'm willing to download manually, but which directory do they go to?

It would probably be easier for you if you just opened up that page in
Internet Explorer, or, if you're using Firefox, install the IE Tab extension.
However, if you still want to download it manually, you should be able to
select where you want it downloaded.

On Windows XP, if you put them here:

C:\Documents and Settings\UserName\Application
Data\Microsoft\Templates\Document Themes

they'll show up in the gallery on the Design tab. This applies to both THMX
and POT files.

File | New | My Templates points to this folder: C:\Docuemtns and
Settings\UserName\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates

This folder is specified in Word, actually. Open Word, click Office Button |
Word Options | Advanced. Scroll to the bottom of the dialog and click the
File Locations button. Then you can opt to modify the User Templates
folder/path if you want by selecting User Templates and then hitting the
Modify button.
