Powerpoint 2008 updates file timestamps when opening files

Beavis

I've noticed that every time I open a file with power point 2008, that the date modified timestamp is updated (before I've changed the file in any way, or saved any changes). Is there any way to prevent this from happening? This is annoying!

I have noticed the same problem. This is very problematic if you have different versions of a file at different times. There is no way of knowing when it was actually saved last time.

You may need to take matters into your own hands and use the filename to store the
real "last-saved" date so that it's visible in the Finder.

Or if you don't need to access the information from Finder, store it in Custom
Properties.

Thanks for the work-arounds, but I this really must be fixed so we have at least the option to NOT modify the file—making it look like you modified it when you merely opened it—thus retaining its date of last real modification. To put is simpler to MS, let the software distinguish between real mods and merely opening a file, as does all my other creative software tools.

I agree. Microsoft needs to fix this problem. We should not have to develop a work-around. File timestamps should not change when a file is only opened. This problem does not exit in Excel or Word. When will Microsoft fix this?

My work-around has been to use Time Machine to replace the file (with the new time stamp) with the original after it is closed.

You're both right but suggesting it here won't necessarily reach Microsoft's ear. Here we're mostly volunteers and other users helping one another.

Use the feedback feature on the Help menu to send a suggestion to MS.
