I can't figure out how to apply a simple animation to all slides at once. Is this available?

I'm not sure what you mean by "simple animation" :) Animation Effects are
properties of the elements on a slide. If you're trying to how the slide
comes on the feature you're looking for is Transitions - available from the
Elements Gallery. In Slide Sorter View you can select 1 or more slides &
apply the same Transition to all selected slides at once.

If it actually is a matter of Animation Effects which you want to have
applied to all slide elements of the same type you can go to View> Master,
select the slide element & apply the Animation Effect to the Master.
