PowerPoint and Word shut down with graphics

On my brand new MacBook Pro, I use PowerPoint to create large (4'x3')
posters that generally include a number of graphics and Excel charts.
I also use these types of graphics in Word docs as well. I've begun
saving projects just about every minute because when I "nudge" or drag
one of these objects, the program shuts down.

Why is this happening and how do I stop it???

First of all we're going to need a bit more information:

What version of Office?
What version of OS X?
What level are each updated to?
Have you added any 3rd party utility programs (or "haxies") on your Mac? If
so, what?

You mentioned 3 of the 4 programs in the Officed suite... which one is it
that "shuts down"?

What - exactly - do you mean by "the program shuts down"? Is there an error
message - If so what specifically does it state?
Is there any one specific type of object that is more prone than others to
cause the crashing?

Remember, we know nothing more about what's happening in your case than what
you tell us:)
