Powerpoint animations cannot delete - says hide timeline...

I am adding custom animations (entrance and exit) a "timeline" option comes
up when I right-click to "delete" some entrances. The option to delete is
darkened everywhere. What is the "timeline" and how do I get things deleted,
and, possibly, use the timeline feature, if it is a convenient one. Thanks
