Does anyone know how to change the format of a saved presentation in powerpoint to not automatically open in slide show view?

Sure, just go to File - Save As...
and resave the presentation as a PowerPoint
Presentation (.pptx) file. It sounds like
the presentation you're working with now
has been saved as a PowerPoint Show (.ppsx).

You won't be able to open the file from Finder
without booting it into Slide Show mode,
so you'll have to open PowerPoint first, and
then open the slide show from within PowerPoint.

We used to be able to just change the file extension
from .pps to .ppt, but that doesn't seem to work
anymore with the new XML-based file formats introduced
from PowerPoint 2007/Win and PowerPoint 2008/Mac.

That's indeed been changed. As a kind of security feature, Office apps include
the file type you saved as within the file in addition to tacking it onto the
file's extension.

If the two don't match, PPT and the other Office 2007/2008 apps aren't supposed
to touch it.

Saves getting taken in by that old "I put salt in the sugar bowl, watch what
happens when Jeff drinks his 'sweetened' morning coffee" trick. ;-)

The nice thing about green tea is that it doesn't matter what the label on the
sugar dish says or what's in it. It's gonna be a bad idea no matter what.
Some lilies are best left ungilded.
