Powerpoint cannot open the file Macintosh

Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) Processor: Intel When I receive and email through Entourage with a pps or ppt file attached, it will not let me open it, nor if I save it to the desktop and try to open in in Powerpoint, I get the follwing msg: PowerPoint cannot open the file "x" The file may be corrupt, in use not a type recognised by PowerPoint, or the file extension may not match the internal format of the file.
My operating system and programs are new and updated. I have run a disk repair. Receiving the files in winzip does not correct the problem.
