PowerPoint does not reflects the presentation file status

Hello PowerPoint Gurus,

Consider this scenario: I open a PowerPoint presentation using 'Edit in
Microsoft Office PowerPoint' from a SharePoint 2007 portal as user1. This
opens the presentation in the Edit mode.

From another machine, I open the same file from the portal using the option
'Edit in Microsoft Office PowerPoint'.

Expected behavior here is PowerPoint should inform that the file has already
been opened by another user (that is what Word or Excel applications do).
But the actual behavior is PPT opens the file just in Read-Only mode for the
other user WITHOUT showing any indication about the opened status of the file.

Interestingly it happens only with Portal - if the file is in a network
share, this does not happen!!! Is the above issue an expected behavior?

My environment includes:

Windows XP SP2, Office 2003 SP2 with recent patches, SharePoint Designer
2007 and SharePoint Portal 2007.

Any help for this issue would be much appreciated.

Regards,
Kavitha .P
