Powerpoint file too large?

I had three powerpoint presentations consisting of mostly photos.
Individually, they worked fine. I cut all the slides from two of the
presentations and pasted into the 3rd and now it just goes into "not
responding" mode when I try to open it. The file size looks to be 485,000kb.
I've increased my RAM from 512 to 1 gig and still getting the same response.
How likely is it that I just need to double my RAM to fix this or have I got
other problems? I'm running a Compaq Presario w/AMD Sempron 3000 & 80 gig
harddrive. I'm trying to open the file from an external 80 gig drive.

~485MB (485,000kb) is huge.

If I were you I would first try copying the file to the harddrive proper and
not try to open it from an external drive.

If you do manage to get the file open, you really need to optimize it for
use in PPT. See

Why are my PowerPoint files so big? What can I do about it?

It's possible the file is corrupt, but I'd expect you to get an error
message, not just a "not responding." But you might read
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/powerpoint/HA011168781033.aspx?pid=CH062556591033
and
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/powerpoint/HA011168771033.aspx?pid=CH010036301033
for further information on recovering corrupt files and preventing
corruption in the first place.

You might also try the Insert Slide From File option discussed in the
Recovering Corrupt presentations article.

And finally, you might see if Open Office's presentation program, Impress,
will open the file. http://www.openoffice.org
