Version: 2004
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)

this was not happening before but now for some reason if i open powerpoint and then try to open something in it using the open command it takes ages and then opens a really weird blank very very long window. i get impatient and close it, so i'm not sure if it will eventually work but something is up.
any ideas?

Not quite enough information to work with :)

Is your installation of Office fully updated - 11.5.3 is the current level.
If you're not sure run Check for Updates from one of the program Help menus.
Also, repair disk permissions using Disk Utility or other such app -
regardless of whether any update needed to be applied.

Also, is OS X fully updated (10.5.6)? Opening files is a function of the OS,
so it may be advisable to get the OS X Leopard 10.5.6 Combo Update & apply
that (even if you've already gotten the update from Software Update - the
Combo is a more extensive version). Fetch it from the Apple Downloads site.

Are you using the OS X feature called Spaces?

Further, what kind of "something" are you trying to open? And does this
happen with one file in particular or with any file you attempt to open?
Same problem if you double-click the file icon in Finder?

don't know about all that stuff, it was not ever relevant as it worked fine and now blamo it doesn't. i didn't change anything. it happens when i try to open anything, such as a power point doc. a power point via the open window where you can then select what to open from your computer places. trying to open from finder on my computer does not work as it doesn't seem to recognize and open in power point( it was a downloaded power point) it doesn't know what to do with it, but this isn't the problem. power point has gone wacky. does this make it clearer?

Well, "all that stuff" is relevant NOW because apparently everything
*doesn't* work fine. If "all that stuff" hasn't been tended to it could very
easily account for the problem. If not being able to open files "isn't the
problem", just exactly what is?... And unfortunately "gone wacky" doesn't
make anything any clearer.

The only reason any of us volunteer in this group is to help other users
resolve issues, but we can't do anything to help if the user refuses to
cooperate. If the answers weren't important the questions wouldn't have been
asked. This isn't an issue that can be resolved by a simple "point 'n'
click" panacea & quite likely involves the OS more than PowerPoint.

I have a client with the exact same issue. She has the latest updates for
Office 2004 and leopard. We have tried repairing permissions.

Is there a known issue with spaces?

The issue is with the file -> open command causing it to freeze before even
selecting a file to open. Doubleclicking a ppt in the finder works fine.
