PowerPoint freezing when loading files.

This is a very tricky and intermittant problem. I'm at a college with many
faculty users (we use roaming profiles & redirection).

When faculty members log on to a computer in our classrooms and try to open
PowerPoint presentations, they freeze and refuse to open. Sometimes.
Sometimes not. It seems to depend on where the file is saved. If saved on
the network, they have the problem, if saved on a flash drive, it goes away.
Sometimes. It can also go away when saved on the desktop (which are
redirected), except for the users that freeze when opening it on the desktop.

Size doesn't matter; we've seen the problem with four-page all-text
presenatations and on big ones. The same presentation will fail if the file
is in one location, but will open in another. Some of the files are
PowerPoint 2003; others are PowerPoint 2007. Sometimes it happens when you
click on the file to open it; other times, you open PowerPoint, find the
file, and have the issue. Once it happens, the file in that location will
continue to have the problem.

It is never a problem on the faculty member's personal PC. It also never
happenss when we use Citrix to read the files. The same files in the same
location.

Some people have the problem, which then goes away. Others are fine, until
the problem occurs.

I'm not making this up as an exercise in making the hardest possible
troubleshooting situation. It's happening, and we can't find anything in
common in all the instances.

Is there something that might make PowerPoint 2007 be unable to load a file
in one instance but not another?
