Powerpoint graphing problems

I have a user that is having trouble editing graphs within powerpoint. The OS
is Windows XP w/SP3, Office 2003 w/SP3, and Symantec Anti-Virus (which does
not have the Office antivirus plug-in, or at least the officeav.dll file does
not exist on the system so please don't point me to the website that tells me
to disable the Norton Anti-Virus Office plug-in) . When he we try to either
open or edit the graph, we get the message "Microsoft Office PowerPoint can't
start the application required to open this object. An error occurred and
this feature is no longer functioning properly. Would you like to repair this
feature now?" If you click yes, it goes through the motions of reinstalling
things and then comes back with "The server application, source file, or item
can't be found, or returned an unknown error. You may need to reinstall the
server application". If you click no, you immediately get the above message.
If you create a new prestentation, insert a new graph, change the numbers,
get out of the graph, and edit the graph again, there are no problems.
However, if you save the presentation, close it, reopen, and then try to open
or edit the graph, the same messages as above occur. All of this happens on
the same machine consistently. If I create a presentation with a graph on a
different computer and the same version of Office, copy it to the bad
computer, open it and try to edit or open the graph, same problems occur. I
have uninstalled and reinstalled Office 2k3 multiple times but to no avail.

Is there ANYONE who has encountered this with a successful resolution? I've
been looking for a solution to this for weeks but to no avail.

Thanks in advance.

But but...that's one of the ones that talks about antivirus and the Office
plug-in, isn't it?

Yeah but I thought the stuff about re-registering MS Graph might be useful.
But you know how often I'm wrong :)

Sorry, forgot to mention, I have already seen this article. These fixes are
for Office 2K or Office XP. Office 2K3 is only briefly referenced, and the
link to the Microsoft knowledge base document is a dead link. I did, however,
try reregistering Graph and it did nothing. I've also cut down the number of
fonts down to 293 but to no avail. One other side note, I was successfully
able to insert, save and edit a graph in a Word document. I expected to have
the same issue in Word that I am having in Powerpoint, but that is not the
case.

Thanks again!

Thanks for the update.

I'm still leaning toward A/V. Can you temporarily disable scanning *.PPT
files and see if that helps?

Oh, have you run Detect and Repair? It's under the Help menu. Since you've
already uninstalled/reinstalled, I don't know that this will help, but it
certainly won't hurt.

Oh, wait, wait. Try reregistering ole32.dll

See
http://groups.google.com/group/micr...k=gst&q="server+application"#bef53b19f96545b7

Click Start, click Run, type the following command, and then click OK:
regsvr32 %systemroot%\system32\ole32.dll
2. In the RegSvr32 dialog box, click OK.
3. Restart the computer.

If it works for you, I'll ask Steve to add it to that FAQ page!
