PowerPoint Links Not Working

I recently updated to the Office 2008 12.1.2 version and now all my PowerPoint links are messed up. This is the same problem I had last year with Office 2004 which Microsoft eventually fixed. I need to know when it will be fixed or whether I have to uninstall Office and use an earlier version. Does anyone have a different solution?

We're not Microsoft ... just PPT users like you are.

MS doesn't tell us whether a given problem will be fixed or when patches will be
released.

It's hard to say whether there's another solution to your specific problem because
we don't know what it is. "Messed up" covers a whole lotta possibilities. ;-) A
more detailed description of the problem might help someone suggest a solution or
workaround.

When I say messed up, I mean they go to the wrong links. They will go to the wrong slide in the presentation or the wrong pdf file.

Thanks ... understood.

I don't have 2008 and mainly work in Windows versions, but assuming
(yeah, I know, big mistake) that they work somewhat alike, there's a
limited amount of storage allowed for link data and no protection against
exceeding the limit.

Once you've added more links than PPT can store, it starts acting pretty
much as you describe. And if you fix one of the broken ones, another one
goes bad.

Workarounds to reduce the amount of link storage used:

- Convert your single presentation to several linked ones; the link
storage limit is per presentation, so by spreading the presentation over
more files, you increase your limit

- Keep file names and paths as short as possible. Often putting linked
files into the same folder as the PPT before creating the link will
eliminate the file path from the link altogether.

- Keep slide titles short. The title of a slide is stored as part of the
link to the slide. One trick is to dupe the title on the slide then drag
the real title off the top of the slide and change its text to something
terse like "Slide 42"

Thanks - I did not know about the limit for links. But this is a presentation I have used before so I know it is not a question of going over the limit. I also use several different presentations as you suggest. I need to find out from someone with Microsoft what they did in the latest upgrade to Office 2008 - the 12.1.2 version is when the problem started. Roberta
