powerpoint locks computer

H

Howard

I installed office 2003 pro about 2 months ago and havent
had any problems with it until now. Whenever I try and
open power point from the start menu or dbl click a
powerpoint file the program opens for a split second and
then the whole system locks up. Ctrl alt del doesnt work
when this happens so I have to turn the power off and
reboot. I used the office 2003 cd to repair the
installation but that didnt work so i completely
reinstalled office but that still didnt work. This is only
happening with power point. I did a full system scan with
updated virus definition just in case but it is clean. Ive
tried everthing I know to do so any suggestions would be
appreciated.
Thanks

What has changed on your system since PPT last opened successfully,
Howard?

Here are some things to try for starters:

http://www.rdpslides.com/pptfaq/FAQ00034.htm

http://www.rdpslides.com/pptfaq/FAQ00220.htm

http://www.rdpslides.com/pptfaq/FAQ00253.htm (check especially the thing
about video drivers)

Other things to try:

Find and delete the *.PCB file on your system. This is the PPT
toolbar, and it will recreate itself when you restart PPT. Note that
you'll lose any customizations you've made to your PPT toolbars.

Find all *.PPA files on your system and rename them to *.OLD *.PPA
files are PPT addins. After renaming, see if PPT starts. If it does, you
can close PPT and re-rename <g> one *.OLD file back to *.PPA. Then
restart PPT again. If it starts okay, you can continue until you can
figure out which PPA is causing ppt to not start.

The only things that I cant thing of that have changed
since powerpoint ran successfully was I installed the
latest java development kit and i upgraded my via chipset
drivers to the version that was released yesterday. I
would roll those back but I cant find it in the device
manager to do so.

If you're using Windows XP, you can go back to a restore point.
Hopefully the java dvp kit and the chipset installation created them
automatically. I usually just head to Start/Help and Support and look
for the Restore Point stuff. Typing System Restore into the search box
in Help and Support will pull up a thing to "run the system restore
wizard." That will get you going if you want to give it a shot.

But you might want to try the other stuff listed in those links and info
below. The PPT problem may have nothing to do with the java kit or the
chipset.

I cant do that b/c system restore is turned off. I was
able to roll back the chipset diver to the previous
version. I dont think the java dev kit is the prob b/c
ive used that for a long time now. I just finished doing
a complete uninstall of the suite, rebooting,
reinstalling and updating but after all that its still
freezing. About the only thing i can think of is not to
use the program. I tested my memory with memtest86 and
its ok. Any more ideas are appreciated.
Thanks

OK I figured it out. FYI....I reseated my memory and that
took care of it. I thought that if that was the case no
programs would work..not just a specific one.
