powerpoint open file error

Operating System: Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard)
Processor: Intel

I cannot open a ppt file from a computer on the network computers. I get a 'file in use' error. I have to copy the ppt file to my Mac in order to open it. I can open Excel and Doc files no problem.
