PowerPoint Slide Layout Defaults

Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: intel

All my slide layouts for title and text slides - for all themes - have the default of vertical text. How do I change PowerPoint's default to horizontal text like in the PC versions of PowerPoint. In all the presentations I have done over the years, I have never had to use vertical text and can't understand why this seems to be the default for the Mac version.
