PowerPoint slide show mode crashes every time

J

JDF5

Version: 2004
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger)
Processor: intel

Even if I create a new empty single page PowerPoint presentation, if I click on slide show mode it crashes PowerPoint immediately (after a brief white screen).

I am running PP 2004 11.3.5 under Tiger 10.4.11. (Our company is not migrating to Leopard until later this year).

My IT group tried reinstalling PP to see if it was a corrupted file and that did not solve the problem.

I am on a MacBook Pro 2.4 (latest hardware). We tested this version and the exact PowerPoint installation image on a Mac Mini and a MacBook Pro 2.33 and it worked fine. We tested it another another hardware idential MBP 2.4 and it also crashes every time PowerPoint goes into slide show mode.

Are other users of PowerPoint 2004 able to use it in slide show mode on the very lastest MacBook Pros? Is there a simple fix?

I have the same MacBook Pro, the same version of OS X, and the same version
of PowerPoint. I have the *exact* same problem. Presentations open and edit
fine. But as soon as I switch to Slide Show or Presenter Tools, I go into the
mode very briefly (a second or two ) and PowerPoint crashes. My PP crash text
is very similar to that of (e-mail address removed) (will post if someone thinks
they can help).

Note: This happens with *all* presentations. I can move the same
presentations to another Mac and I have no problems there.

Like (e-mail address removed), even if I try Slide view with an empty new
single page presentation (generated by PP at launch), the same error occurs.

I had the same problem with OS X 10.4.10 too on this machine.

Also like (e-mail address removed), I have reinstalled MS Office Mac 2004. Once
as a reinstall, and once as a complete wipe. I am fully up-to-date with all
Office updates. But the problem is there even before I install the updates.

Have a sneaking suspicion this problem has to do with video. My specific
model MacBook Pro is the MBP 17 with 2.4GHz. This machine has the
higher-resolution screen, 1920 x 1200. I have tried reducing the resolution
but that has not helped.

Any advice would be welcomed.

My company has replicated this problem on several machines and can not find a fix. Our solution is to test moving to 10.5 JDF5

Hi Folks -

Just to put things into perspective - although I appreciate your
frustration:

I'm running PPt 11.3.5 (Office 11.4.1) in Tiger (10.4.11) on a 15" MBP 2.4,
4GB with absolutely no such problems. I sincerely don't believe the problem
is with PPt - it's been out there to long with no similar reports.

The first suggestion I'd make is that you go to the Apple site, get the
10.4.11 COMBO Updater & apply that (even f you're already at that build) as
well as any updates to other Apple software that haven't yet been applied.

Also, check System Profiler to see which actual Model Identifier is
indicated in the Hardware Overview. If it's 2.1 or 1.1 scour the same Apple
downloads list for any applicable firmware & graphics updates. There have
been quite a few issues with MBP graphics. BTW - The 2.4 processor doesn't
mean it's the "latest hardware". There have been several revisions of MBP
with 2.4's (the "latest" MBPs are equipped with 2.5 & 2.6) so any given 2.4
could have been in the pipeline for a year or so:) The Model Identifier
will tell for sure. Even if it's a 3.1 you'll probably need at least one of
the firmware updates. You'll find it all here:

http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/index.html

Make sure to run Disk Utility - Repair Disk Permissions & restart the Mac
after applying any updates. If you continue to have problems post back with
specifics & perhaps there's more someone can offer.

Also, If you do upgrade to Leopard you might want to consider staying at the
base installation of 10.5.0 - the 10.5.2 update seems to be breaking a
number of things for a lot of people - not just re Office. I'm holding off
to see if 10.5.3 gets things back on an even keel.
