PowerPoint STops Slide Show to return to normal view ... force to"resume"

Folks,

Was host of a big presentation last evening. Using PowerPoint 2007 with
an Epson projector. Started the slide show in the normal way. Every
five minutes or so the slide show would quit being displayed and would
instead return to the normal PowerPoint view. thre would be a small
toolbar floating near the top of the screen which invited me to "resume
slide show". Clicking on that using the laptop's mouse would return the
slide show where it left off.

Very irritating and all this in front of hundreds of people.

Cannot find any setting to control this. Why is this happening and how
to stop?

Was your computer setup with a mirrored display (same thing on computer
monitor and projector) or extended desktop (different content on computer
monitor and projector)?

Mirrored (I think). Actually, just plugged in the computer to the
projector, and it worked (at least it looked like). Didn't change
anything. Didn't even consider it as it worked.

Just set up the machine on the projector here at home. Can re-create.
Using "Mirroring", e.g. what's on the computer is exactly the same as on
projector. I can't find any settings in Slide Show Settings that appear
to have an influence on this behaviour.

My guess is that there was an application running in the background, like a
WiFi card checking for a WiFi network, which it could not find, or some
other AutoStart program which did not start correctly.

Why would PowerPoint be programmed with something akin to "IF ANOTHER
PROGRAM FAILS THEN QUIT SLIDESHOW"? That doesn't make much sense.
What's the connection that causes this theory? What dependancy does
PowerPoint have on other programmes?

If the reason was a search for a WiFi network (to which you did not
comment), then that's an operating system issue - and those are always taken
more seriously than any program events.

WiFi was turned off (by the switch on the laptop).
