PowerPoint Templae

I have downloaded a template for a presentation. I need to subdue the colors
on the template so the text is easily readable. I would change the color of
the text but every color is difficult to read. I have tried to go to Master
template and change it that way but nothing changes. I am using '07, any
ideas?

Never mind. I figured it out. I had to save the background as a picture and
add it through slide master, then I was able to change the transparency.

1)
if the template is constructed from regular powerpoint objects

ie. rectangles lines circles etc,

then you should be able to select them (ungroup them if necessary), and edit
the fill or line colours of them.

2)
if the template is made from one picture, then things are a little trickier

One option would be to use the inbuilt picture options of powerpoint - to
darken or lighten the image.
see step 13 here
http://www.awesomebackgrounds.com/instructions.htm#darken

Another option would be to overlay a rectangle over the whole image, and
give it a black fill colour, but make it semi-transparent.... so allowing
the picture to be seen through your new black rectangle. (or use a white
rectangle, depending if you are trying to lighten or darken the image)

cheers
