PowerPoint Viewer won't recognise I have Win98SE

I have Win98SE and need to view PowerPoint slideshows (I do not have
PowerPoint)

I have installed the free “Microsoft PowerPoint-Viewer 2003†from here
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...27-43ab-4f24-90b7-a94784af71a4&DisplayLang=en
I received a "successfully-installed" message.

I run Win98SE (Definitely)
And yet when I try to open the “successfully-installed†viewer I get a
message “The Microsoft Office PowerPoint Viewer 2003 could not start. This
version of
the PowerPoint Viewer is only supported on Microsoft Windows 98 Second
Edition, Windows Millennium Edition, Windows 2000, Windows XP and Windows
Server 2003.â€!!!!!

Someone else has exactly the same problem but received no constructive reply
http://www.officekb.com/Uwe/Forum.a...003-could-not-start-Windows-98-Second-Edition

When I look at “Quick-view†for the viewer it says it is for Win NT and
Win95 (!!!!!!!again)

Does anyone know what on earth is going on?

see this text on the download page...

To install on a computer running Windows 98 Second Edition (SE):
1.. Install the updated Windows installer for Windows 98.
2.. Restart your computer.
3.. Follow the installation instructions in the section above.
which links to this (which is a bad link)

Thanks TAJ...but I'd "already been there, done that!"

After I do the download I get the message that "The service already exists".

(Because I have previously updated Works, years ago?).

Any other ideas please???

I don't know JoAnn.
It's a .pps file attached to an email. I can't open it to get details of
version.
(Because I get the viewer message that I must have Win98SE etc)
A colleague with Home XP opened this successfully by installing the same
viewer.

Does it make any difference?

Why does Quickview for the viewer say "32bit for Win95 and NT"
Isn't this actually the wrong viewer the link is downloading?

Thanks

While this won't get the viewer running, if you need to see
the show, you might try to download, install and run the
Open Office software from www.openoffice.com. This software
is free. It has programs that will read most Word, Excel and
PowerPoint files and display them. Might get you around
your current problem.
