Powerpoint X crashing

Every time I try to save my presentation,nothing happens and I have to
force quit! For awhile if I saved the presentation after every
modification, it worked for awhile, but now if I add just one slide or
make the smallest change after opening the presentation, I can't save.
The mouse wheel just starts spinning and that's that. I've tried
saving the presentation as a new file and tried starting an entirely
new presentation -- same thing. It was working just fine a week ago!
What happened??
