I have an e-mail powerpoint attachment that I can't open
because I don't have powerpoint. When I try to download
pwerpoint it does not go through. Do I need to set-up
office first?

MS doesn't offer Powerpoint as a download, but there
is a Powerpoint viewer at
http://microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=d1649c22-b51f-4910-93fc-4cf2832d3342
(a newer version should be available in October)

and a Powerpoint web presentation add-in for your browser at
http://microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=4033A84A-24C7-40B2-8783-D80ADA33CFF8
